State Constitutional Marriage Amendment
Home / The Issues / Archives / 2005 Session
(given at the press conference announcing the introduction of a state constitutional amendment concerning the definition of marriage.)
3/31/05
We, as a nation, are engaged in a great debate that will significantly shape our culture. This debate is occurring in our courts,in our legislative bodies and in the public square.
In the legislature, government is our immediate business, but without strong and healthy families our job here in government becomes nearly impossible.
There is no more important discussion that we can have than a discussion concerning public policy that promotes healthy and strong families.
The question before us today is, "Will the time-honored institution of marriage, between one man and one woman, remain as the core institution for our great nation, or will unelected judges reduce the legal definition of marriage to any combination of anyone?"
I commit to stand firmly in defense of marriage, knowing that a healthy and flourishing culture must have at its foundation, a solid respect for marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
Marriage is that basic unit of society which is essential for a civilized people.
Marriage is a moral compass that transcends ages, cultures and creeds.
A healthy marriage, consisting of one man and one woman, has for millennia created an environment of stability and compassion. And it has proven to be the most effective way to maintain a safe, nurturing environment for children.
That is why I am introducing a concurrent resolution to submit to the voters a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
