Across the country, in the 2010 elections, the people called for a different direction. In numbers not seen in decades, candidates committed to lower taxes and limited government were embraced. At the national level the message was loud and clear.
Here in Colorado, in 2011, this message was sent again, as a sales and income tax increase was thoroughly rejected by the voters. The people of Colorado have again said: do not make government bigger, more expensive, and more intrusive.
I am grateful to the people in Senate District 15 for their endorsement of my work in the legislature. I pledge anew to represent their interests first in the Colorado State Senate. Growing opportunities for individuals and families, not growing government is my goal as your state senator.
The challenge before all of us is to translate this powerful message from the ballot box to meaningful public policies. For our state to thrive, businesses must have confidence to expand and grow. Taxes, fees, and regulations must shrink. Individuals and families must have the freedom to follow their own dreams.
Our state is blessed with so many possibilities. The people of this great state are energetic, positive, and well educated. Our land is blessed with beauty and tremendous resources. Our major industries: energy, agriculture, tourism, and high tech should be set free to build a greater prosperity for all. Strict control of government will yield opportunities for the people, as the private sector, who are the producers, are given the priory.
I encourage each of us to strive for our own personal best. Invest time in your children, make your family a priority, be a good neighbor, be generous with those around you who are less fortunate, be responsible in your personal finances. Only when we have sufficient self-government, can we thrive without an over burdening civil government. Never forget what previous generations have sacrificed for our current freedom and prosperity.
For life and for liberty, I pledge to do all I can for the people of the great state of Colorado.
